10:00am - 3:00pm

Manor Farm, Cattistock, Dorchester, Dorset

DT2 0JJ

Bertie Newman from Manor Farm, Cattistock joined AHDB’s Farm Excellence project as a Beef and Lamb Strategic Farmer in 2017.

Located on an organic farm in Dorset, Bertie runs a flock of North Country Cheviot ewes along with other enterprises including a suckler herd and a TB isolation unit for rearing dairy-bred beef calves.

During the pandemic, Bertie kept us updated and shared how in June 2020 the low rainfall positively contributed to minimal losses whilst lambing outdoors but the very dry weather was suggesting lambs may have to be weaned early.

Driven to improve overall farm performance and profitability, Bertie has achieved many successes whilst being a Strategic Farmer including winning the Farmers Weekly award for Young Farmer of the Year 2020. As Bertie’s Strategic Farm project comes to a close, this final farm meeting will provide the opportunity for farmers and industry to learn more about Bertie’s experience and progress.

The event will include a farm walk and discussion on topics such as:

  • Introducing a rotational grazing system to improve grass quality and quantity
  • Reseeding with herbal leys to increase sward diversity and optimise stock growth rates
  • Establishing a TB isolation unit for rearing dairy-bred beef calves

We’ll also be joined by Luppo Diepenbroek, Independent Grassland Consultant, who has supported Bertie as part of Strategic Farm project, and Ben Barber, Veterinary Surgeon at Synergy Farm Health and main Veterinary Advisor for Buitelaar.
