SPP falls week ending 30 October

Wednesday, 3 November 2021

The EU-spec SPP fell for the week ended 30 October, to 144.67p/kg. This was 3.55p lower than a week earlier. Supplies of live pigs continue to exceed available processing capacity, and the backlog of pigs on farm remains. As happened both two, and four weeks ago, low prices paid for some batches of pigs destined for markets requiring minimal butchery have likely weighed on the overall average. As has been the case for some time, continued low prices in the EU also play an important role in driving price declines here.

Estimated slaughter for the week was 170,600 head, slightly more than the previous week, but 2,100 head fewer than the same week a year earlier.

The average carcase weight was up by a further 570g from the previous week to 91.75kg. This is more than a kilogram heavier than even the weights seen in January.

GB pig prices for the week ending 30 October 2021

A 7kg weaner price was published this week, at £33.68/head. This price is about £1 lower than the last published price, two weeks ago. Again, prices in the weaner market are suffering from the dropping price of finished pigs, and logistical difficulties on farms.

For the week ending 23 October, the EU-spec APP recorded a fall to stand at 153.04p/kg. This was 0.41p lower on a week earlier, and more than 8p lower than last year. The gap between the two price series narrowed to 4.82p.
