Cattle prices tick down again

In the week ending 16th July, average GB deadweight cattle prices decreased for the second week in a row.

All cattle prices were back on last week, with the average deadweight price for prime cattle in GB dropping by 2.3p to 440p/kg, back to levels seen a month ago.

Overall steers were back 1.3p to 441.2p/kg, young bulls decreased by 2.5p to 435.3p/kg overall, while heifers dropped by 3.9p to average 439.9p/kg overall. Cow prices fared little better; the overall average lost 5p to stand at 359.5p/kg, while -O4L animals were 4.6p down on average.

An estimated 31,800 prime cattle were slaughtered this week in GB abattoirs, up 1.4% from last week, and up 6% on the same week last year. Cull cow numbers were down 1% on last week, with an estimated 9,500 being processed.

Although down from the last few weeks, the average all-prime cattle price is still tracking at more than 39p/kg above this time last year, and 77p above the 5-year average for the week.
