10:00am - 3:00pm

West Sherford Farm, Brixton, Plymouth, Devon

PL8 2DP

Johnny Haimes from West Sherford Farm, Brixton, joined AHDB’s Farm Excellence project as a Beef and Lamb Strategic Farmer in 2017.

Located in South Devon, Johnny finishes dairy-bred beef youngstock on an outdoor forage-based system that is near organic. Johnny runs his system without fertiliser or sprays but maximises the output of his forage by rotationally grazing 200 acres of herbal leys.

Previously, Johnny ran a suckler herd before braving the significant decision to change systems to ensure his business worked for him, you can hear more about Johnny’s story in his recent webinar Be bold, be brave and ask ‘does my business work for me?’.

During the pandemic, Johnny kept us updated and in April 2020 he shared his experience with outwintering youngstock on herbal leys for the first time following the dispersal of his suckler herd in November 2019.

As Johnny’s Strategic Farm project comes to a close, this final farm meeting will provide the opportunity for farmers and industry to learn more about Johnny’s experience and progress.

We’ll also be joined by Luppo Diepenbroek, Independent Grassland Consultant, who has supported Johnny with consultancy as part of Strategic Farm project.

The event will include a farm walk and discussion on topics such as:

  • Reseeding with herbal leys to increase sward diversity, optimise growth rates and outwinter cattle
  • Introducing a rotational grazing system to improve grass quality and quantity
  • Working with the dairy industry to source dairy-bred beef youngstock
