Potato Weekly

25 October 2019

At a glance

  • Lifting progress has been better this week, especially for those on lighter land. Although progress has been made, significant concerns remain for crops still underwater with more rain forecast.
  • Good quality supplies of certain varieties in the bag market are becoming increasingly difficult to source. Some top-up supplies are being purchased on free-buy for the processing sector.

Updates

The latest report of lifting progress, yields and crop quality in Great Britain, up to Tuesday 22 October.

Weekly price

2019 crop - Packing
England - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
  • Quality is highly variable, with premiums offered for top quality material.
  • In Scotland, with the end of the month approaching, movement picked up for contracted supplies. Free-buy markets remain quiet with a large portion of sales heading into England.
Scotland - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
2019 crop - Bags
GB - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
  • Bag market trade was reported as ‘challenging’, as certain varieties continue to be difficult to source.
  • Varying degrees of quality issues were reported as supplies enter into storage.
  • Agria continues to command a high premium as availability of good quality supplies is limited. Due to high prices and tight availability some buyers are unwilling to engage and are turning to more competitively priced varieties. As a result, the number of quotes we received was below the threshold for publication and we are unable to publish an Agria price this week.
East (Yorks, East Mids, Eastern Counties) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
West (West Mids, Wales, North West) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
South (South West, South, South East) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
Scotland - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
Insufficient quotes reported.

GB - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
  • Exports have slowed for many this week. By mid-week many had stopped exports due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation from 1st November.

They give an indication of the range of prices achieved in the past week.
