Potato Weekly

13 March 2020

At a glance

  • Demand across all sectors this week has been mixed. With the COVID-19 position developing at pace, market reactions are changing frequently. Some reports have suggested increased retail sales over the short term. Meanwhile, the food service sector is experiencing a hit on demand as footfall decreases with more people self-isolating. Should the situation escalate, this may well be exacerbated.
  • After reports over successive weeks of growers pressuring for a price increase, we have had reports of slight increases not deterring demand.
  • Earlies planting progression is still a key watch point. If significantly delayed this marketing year could extend.

Open Board Meeting – POSTPONED

Due to the rising number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the UK, we have taken the decision to postpone the Open Board Meeting that was scheduled for next week. We will run the open session via a webinar as soon as possible. Once we have arranged the technology for this we will share registration details. The Board value the opportunity to hear your views, so while we believe it was sensible to postpone the meeting we’re sorry to not see you face-to-face and hope you can join us for the webinar. If you have any questions in the meantime please contact jimmy.phillips@ahdb.org.uk.
