As we reach July, we find ourselves halfway through another uncertain year. With the first drop in basic payments this year, there is no doubt that change is upon us, and we want to help you to prepare your business.

Though the government is developing options to reward environmental land management through the Sustainable Farming Incentive, our analysis (which is being updated to reflect new information from Defra) shows these payments will not cover the loss of BPS. Now is the ideal time to create an action plan to secure your farm’s future for you and the family and explore options to replace the reduction in income. To do this speak with your family, advisers and to other farmers in your local area or use the resources on our website.

This week we are delighted to be able to deliver the first of our on-farm events for this year. So much so, we started with two in one day yesterday, visiting our Strategic Farmers in Cornwall and in Shropshire, with more to follow in the coming weeks. We have understandably kept numbers restricted, however, it is positive to see so many of you keen to get back to these practical events where you will have the opportunity to learn from one another’s practices. There are still places available, so please visit our events page to book your place.

Finally, have you seen our #FireUpForSummer digital campaign? Designed to inspire consumers to use premium cuts, showing off the ease and versatility of cooking with beef, lamb and pork steaks on the barbecue. There are some helpful videos and tasty BBQ recipes so that come rain or shine you can cook up a storm!

Keep safe and best wishes

With the process of reduction, and eventual elimination, of direct payments underway, we’ve been looking at what this means for farmers and growers. In this article, we’re looking at a very simplistic picture of how SFI payments could stack up against filling the gap left by the removal of Direct Payments. Read more
