Bluetongue virus – what you need to know
Cases of bluetongue virus (BTV-3) continue to be identified, and the restricted zone has been extended – the whole of Northamptonshire and part of Warwickshire now fall within the zone.
To check what you can and cannot do in terms of moving animals, refer to this quick-reference table. You can also view photos of the clinical signs of BTV on our website to help you know what to look out for.
To help us understand the impact of BTV-3 in the UK this year and so that we can all be prepared for the ongoing impact of the disease, we would appreciate it if you could complete this short survey.
If you have questions and would like to speak to someone about bluetongue, call the AHDB hotline on 024 7771 0386.

Connecting UK farming, nutrition and sustainability
Earlier this year, along with the School of Sustainable Food and Farming at Harper Adams University, we hosted an event for nutritionists and dietitians to explore the vital connection between UK farming, nutrition and sustainability.
One attendee, Miranda Shelley from Lidl GB, said: “When we look at the Eatwell Guide and the diets we should be eating, we know that food and meat production has a huge part to play in that. So, if we can align our strategies and make sure the kinds of projects that we’re working on support both those topics, then that’s absolutely the right way to go.”

Records for maternal breeding evaluation reach one million

Signet Breeding Services has reached a major milestone, publishing Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) for more than one million animals within the maternal evaluation.
The value of genetic improvement to the UK sheep industry exceeds £10.7m per annum (Abacus Review, 2015), and at the farm gate, lambs sired by high-index rams can easily exceed an additional £4 per lamb – with greater added value seen in maternal breeds where genetic gains are expressed year after year.

The results will inform discussions to standardise a consistent approach to assessing wormer efficacy. The survey will remain open until the end of the year and the results will be shared in 2025.
