Bridging the gap between education and agriculture
We have collaborated with LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) to bring subject curriculums to life through a suite of secondary and A-level resources linking to food production and farming.
Two versions of the resources have been created. One will be used by A-level teachers and the other will be for farmers engaging young people in hands-on learning experiences on farm visits.

Waste-derived animal bedding
The wet autumn in 2023 meant that planting winter cereal crops was limited, and the persistent wet weather has knocked yields down on the five-year average. As a result, the 2024 harvest was much reduced, meaning less straw is going to be available.
Waste-derived materials can be suitable to be used as animal bedding, but it must be visibly clean and non-hazardous to be compliant.

Foot-and-mouth disease in Germany
Following a confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Germany, we are closely monitoring the situation and assessing its potential impact on UK agriculture.
FMD was confirmed in a 14-head herd of water buffalo in the state of Brandenburg on 10 January.
Following this news, the UK Government announced a ban on the import of live cattle, pigs and sheep from Germany, as well as restrictions on products of animal origin, to protect farmers and their livelihoods.

Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep
The Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) group is exploring a method that could provide you with valuable information on the worm species present in dung samples.
The project, funded by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), aims to look at a simpler, potentially cheaper method than is currently available.
SCOPS urges all sheep famers, vets and advisers to have their say and complete a short survey.
