New five-year GB Calf Strategy launched
The GB Calf Strategy 2025–2030 will challenge the dairy-beef sector to ensure every calf is reared with care, purpose and value.
The strategy outlines three focus areas: Right calf, right start and right route – with clear, measurable goals and actions listed for each.
This ambitious strategy, developed by AHDB, Innovation for Agriculture, the NFU and Ruminant Health and Welfare (RH&W), follows the progress made from the 2020–2023 GB Dairy Calf Strategy with industry input from 45 farmers, vets, processors, retailers and industry bodies.

In the first half of this year, UK red meat exports were worth £966m – up nearly 10% on the same period in 2024 – while the value of UK dairy exports increased 20% on the year to £1.1 billion.
Along with export businesses from the red meat and dairy sectors, we have been flying the flag for quality beef, lamb, pork and dairy on the global stage at Anuga in Cologne to build on the success achieved from January to June.

Cattle movement reporting for England is changing
In partnership with Defra, the Livestock Information Transformation Programme is introducing new technology to trace cattle movements more accurately in England.
The move from the Cattle Traceability System (CTS) to the Livestock Information Service (LIS) for English cattle notifications is planned for summer 2026. This will modernise traceability services, making cattle traceability smarter, faster and more accurate for better disease control and to strengthen long-term resilience to animal diseases.

Bluetongue virus serotype 3: It's not too late to vaccinate
There are three vaccines available for BTV-3, and to help vets and farmers determine the one most suitable, we have developed vaccine comparison tables.
We have also developed three calculators to help you work out how much it will cost to vaccinate your livestock against bluetongue virus and how much it could save you.
There is a comprehensive range of resources available on the AHDB and RH&W websites to support farmers and veterinary professionals.

Be on the lookout for acorn poisoning
It is a bumper year for some fruits, nuts and seeds, producing a feast for wildlife. However, the glut of acorns brings with it an increased risk of acorn poisoning in livestock.
Outbreaks of acorn poisoning tend to occur after stormy weather, when large numbers of acorns fall from trees. However, it can also arise in mast years – when nature produces a bumper crop.
Mortality rates can be as high as 70%.

Make use of our feed and forage calculator
With the lack of grass growth due to the extremely dry summer, thoughts will be turning to winter feed and how to make up for the potential shortfalls caused by reduced silage availability.
What will be key is measuring what you have on hand, including tonnes of dry matter on the farm, and analysing the average metabolizable energy (ME) and protein using recent silage or bought-in feed analyses where available.
Use our feed and forage calculator to understand if you have a deficit based on current livestock numbers and feed supply and to make decisions about stock sales or purchasing of additional feed.
